What I Would Do If I Needed an Apartment in 60 Days With HORRIBLE Credit
by Apt Planning Co
This isn’t just one of those “here’s what I would do” posts where I’m guessing.
1. I’d start the SECOND I knew I wanted to move
I’m starting now.
The goal during these first few weeks is to get my application situation together before I ever fall in love with an apartment.
2. I’d start with a credit restart
If my credit was horrible and there was nothing I could do within 60 days to fix it then THIS would be my option going forward. This takes care of my credit showing up.
This part matters because there is no way i'm getting approved for the apartment I WANT with bad credit.
3. I’d add ONE tradeline first.
If I’m starting with a completely new credit profile, I want some positive history reporting to help me begin building credit which leads me to my next step.
This can boost my score from 0-700 fast.
4. I’d open a secured credit card
There are plenty of secured cards available where you put down a refundable deposit that generally becomes your credit limit.
Then once it arrived, I’d use it ASAP.
I’d keep my utilization under 30% and pay attention to the statement closing date and due date.
The entire point is to demonstrate responsible use.
5. Then I’d WAIT for everything to actually report
This is the part people skip.
I’d give the new account one month to appear on my credit reports.
Then I’d check all of my reports again.
At this point, if everything has reported correctly, I'll now have both the tradeline I added and my own new secured account reporting.
Now I can actually see what my credit profile looks like after the strategy has had time to work.
6. While all of that is happening, I’m getting my application together
I’m making sure I know:
- How I’m proving my income
- What documents I’ll need
- What I realistically want to spend
- How much I have available for move-in
- My move-by date
7. THEN I’d start apartment hunting
Now we’re getting somewhere. 😂
Once I’m closer to my move date and my application prep is together, then I’m looking seriously.
I’m looking for apartments with move-in specials.
Free rent.
Reduced deposits.
Waived fees.
Concessions.
Whatever specials are available in my market.
Because getting approved is one thing.
I also want to avoid spending $3,000–$4,000 just to get the keys if I can strategically find a property offering lower move-in costs.
Then I’d apply
By this point, I’ve had approximately 60 days to:
prepare → build positive credit → get my documents together → understand my situation → find properties that make sense → apply strategically.
And that’s the part people get backwards.
They apartment hunt first.
Fall in love with a place.
THEN they start asking:
“Wait… what credit score do they want?”
“Are they going to see my eviction?”
“What can I use for proof of income?”
“How much do I need to move in?”
“I got denied. Now what?”
Plan the move before you pick the apartment.
And if you’re reading this thinking:
“Okay… I know I need to move, but I don’t know how to put all of this together for MY situation.”
That’s exactly what my approval services are for.
If you have bad credit, an eviction, rental collections, income-documentation issues, or you've already been denied and you’re trying to figure out your next move, start with my approval intake.
I’ll look at what you’re working with and help you determine what needs attention before you start throwing money at applications.
